International News: On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House in a bid to find solutions for the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has lasted over three and a half years. Arriving at 11 PM IST, Zelensky held a 45-minute discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump. During the meeting, he expressed Ukraine’s strong desire for peace and emphasized that direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin are crucial to achieving a resolution.

Trump Sees Opportunity for Peace

Trump said that President Putin also does not want the war to continue, which opens the door for a possible settlement. He mentioned that if discussions go well, a tripartite meeting between Putin, Trump, and Zelensky could take place. During the conversation, Trump also criticized the handling of the war by his successor, President Joe Biden, calling his administration “corrupt” and implying that mismanagement has prolonged the conflict.

European Leaders Observe Talks

While Zelensky and Trump were in the Oval Office, leaders from major European countries were in a separate room observing the proceedings. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg were present. These leaders followed the discussions closely to stay updated on the developments and to support Ukraine diplomatically. Later, Trump also held discussions with these European leaders after midnight.

Security Guarantees and Prisoner Release

During the meeting, Trump assured European leaders that Ukraine would receive strong security guarantees, in line with European proposals. He also expressed hope that following potential tripartite talks, Russia would release over 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners. This was seen as a major step in building confidence and opening channels for a peaceful resolution.

Positive and Constructive Atmosphere

Unlike a tense meeting held in February, this session was notably calm and constructive. Both Trump and Zelensky were seen smiling and laughing several times, reflecting a friendly and collaborative atmosphere. After the meeting, Zelensky described the discussions as “very good” and stressed that Ukraine needs the continued support of the U.S. and European nations to counter Russian aggression effectively.

Weapons Deal and Future Cooperation

Reports indicate that Ukraine has agreed to a major arms deal with the United States, valued at $100 billion. This deal will provide Ukraine with advanced weaponry and enhance its defensive capabilities. The meeting also strengthened coordination between Ukraine, the U.S., and European countries, ensuring ongoing support in terms of security, diplomacy, and humanitarian assistance.

The White House meeting marked an important step in international efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. With commitments to security, potential prisoner releases, and a historic weapons deal, the discussion between Zelensky and Trump highlighted the importance of cooperation between Ukraine, the U.S., and European allies. While challenges remain, this meeting offers hope for a peaceful resolution in the near future.
